Saint Louis, USA
WHO:Up to 48 Old School Magic players willing to gather this summer at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to relive a bit of the 1990s. Card-slingers from throughout the Mid-West and Mid-South will be invited to this event.
WHAT: A 93/94 Paladin Magic tournament hosted by River City Merfolk, the Saint Louis region's Old School Magic club. Proxies will be welcome at this event, but please put some effort into them (e.g., no unaltered basic lands with hand-scrawled card names). If you are unfamiliar with Paladin Magic, please refer to The Northern Paladins' website linked to below. Paladin Magic is a 1 x Strip Mine format that uses "gentlemen's rules" and restricts a few more cards than other 93/94 rule sets.
WHERE: The Grove Meeting Room at Urban Chestnut, 4465 Manchester Avenue, Saint Louis, MO. We have the Grove Meeting Room reserved for this event, but players will need to order food and drinks individually at the bar throughout the day. Urban Chestnut is located at the western end of the Grove entertainment district in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood, approximately four miles west of Downtown Saint Louis. For more information on the venue, check out their website below.
WHEN: Saturday, July 12, 2025, from noon-6:30 PM. Check-in and card signing will begin at noon. First round will follow promptly at 12:30. We'll play between four and six Swiss rounds over the course of the afternoon (depending on the final player count), followed by a super-fancy awards ceremony.
WHY: To benefit the Little Bit Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty throughout the Saint Louis region by providing children with the resources they need to succeed in school and at home. At the Old School Thrill at Blueberry Hill in 2024, the Merfolk raised a total of $280 for Little Bit. We hope to at least double our donation this year. More information on Little Bit's mission and projects can be found at their website below.
HOW MUCH: $20 per player to be paid in advance of the event. PayPal to hadenmsmith (friends & family) is preferred. Please make payment before completing the registration form. Your $20 will cover registration for the event as well as a donation to Little Bit. This will not cover any food or drink at the event, but players can order off the regular Urban Chestnut menu throughout the day.
WHAT ELSE: Each player will receive a booster pack of door prizes, the Top 4 players will receive special prizes, and the first place finisher will be awarded the River City Merfolk Championship Trophy plus free registration to defend their title at our next formal event in 2026. Ryan Gresco, the winner of the 2024 Old School Thrill at Blueberry Hill, is the reigning trophy holder and has won free registration for this event. Raffle tickets will also be available for $5 each at the event, with 100% of the raffle money going toward our donation to Little Bit. The winner of the raffle drawing will receive a super-special, one of a kind prize related to the early history of Magic. Finally, all players are encouraged (but not required) to bring Magic alters, 1990s- and St. Louis-related ephemera, and other random goodies for the prize table, which we will draft in reverse finish order at the conclusion of the awards ceremony. If interested, also inquire about River City Merfolk's informal Premodern meetup planned for the Friday night before the event at Platypus (located across the street from Urban Chestnut).
